Must see attractions in Canberra, Australia

Canberra which is intentionally situated between Sydney and Melbourne is the capital of Australia. Don’t be intimidated by considering it all about history and culture as it still has a lot more to offer. There are quite a few restaurants and hotels coming up in the region and also interesting activities to keep you content. You can either take a hot air ballon ride, visit the lovely gardens, enjoy a cruise on the Lake Burley or check out some world class museums and galleries. Even for kids there are activities like Segway tour, Trampoline Centres, or spend some time at Big Splash Waterpark.

Well, that’s not all some of the must check attractions here are:-

Parliament House – Since 1988 this has been the law making hub for Australia so how about taking a tour inside the building. You will get to hear some fascinating stories, and see some great art and this is a good way to get familiar with the history of Australia. Tours take place every half an hour and start at 9am until 5pm.

Mount Ainslie – Take a train to the summit of this mountain to enjoy the breathtaking views of the city. You can see the iconic Parliament house and beyond. If you don’t want to take the train you can even hike up there as it doesn’t take long to reach the lookout.

Must see museums – Some of the worlds best museums and galleries of Australia are located in Canberra and it’s worth checking it out to enlighten yourself about the culture and history of Australia. Places to check out here are National Gallery of Australia, War Memorial and National Portrait Gallery

Check out the MarketsOld Bus Depot is a popular marketplace you should visit, you will be able to find handicrafts, clothes, homeware and food at this iconic market. Southside Farmers Market held every Sunday is worth checking out as it makes you feel a part of the community and you are helping the local farmers grow their small business.

Lake Burley Griffin – Take a cruise down this mesmerising lake which is the heart of the city. This is a artificial man made lake but that doesn’t stops you from enjoying your ride here. You can even enjoy the views of this lake from the numerous cafes or restaurants, also many significant tourists attractions are located nearby this lake which gives you more reasons to visit.

National Arboretum – This beloved attraction of Canberra is quickly become a favourite among the tourists as well. There are quite a few walking trails, and a village centre which is a entertainment hub. At The Bonsai Pavilion and Penjing Collection you can find some exotic miniature trees as well. This Arboretum is redefining and inspiring others on how we can take care of mother earth while still enjoying it’s benefits.

New Acton – This area is a fairy new hub for the people of Canberra, known for its cutting edge designs and funky architecture you will be amazed by this place. You can try some great bars, restaurants and cafes here. Also not to mention the fancy Palace Cinemas and Ovolo Nishi hotel.

Gold Creek Village – If I stayed in Canberra this would be my favourite place to visit with my family. All the attractions are within walking distance so you don’t end up tiring yourself, Cockington Green Gardens is a fabulous place to start your day here or head to the National Dinosaur Museum to be intrigued. Canberra Walk in Aviary have around 400 birds flying around, it’s a great way to see the different species in the open. For arty people out there you should make a visit to Aarwun Gallery to see some great art from leading artists of Australia.

Telstra Tower – I love visiting observatories as it provides a bird eye view of the city and this one at the summit of Black Mountain gives a stunning show of the city. Make sure to catch the view just before sunset as you get to experience the city during sunset and when the city lights are shimmering.

If you have a few more days in this alluring city you can even make it a point to visit Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Canberra National Zoo, Questacon at National Science and Technology Centre and Royal Australian Mint.
