Exploring the Unique Volcanic Landscape of Nisyros, Greece


Nisyros, a small Greek island located in the Aegean Sea, is known for its magnificent volcano that’s both dormant and active. Despite being a small island with only 1,000 residents, Nisyros is a popular destination for visitors seeking to explore the island’s unique geology, immerse themselves in the local culture and history, or simply enjoy a relaxing holiday away from the hustle and bustle of more touristy destinations. The island is also known for its therapeutic hot springs, which are said to have healing properties. 1. Mandraki, the main town on the island, offers several things to see and do. Among them is the 15th-century Church of Panagia Spiliani, which houses numerous ecclesiastical relics, and the Ecclesiastical Museum, which has several heirlooms from the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani, collections of incense, and old gospels. Additionally, there is a 14th-century castle that offers spectacular island views, a period acropolis called Paelokastro, a Folklore Museum located in an 18th-century building, and an Archaeological Museum housing many artefacts from various archaeological sites around the island.

2. One of the most popular attractions on the island is walking on the crater of the active volcano, which is located in the centre of Nisyros. To access the volcano, you need a ticket, and it’s about a half-hour drive from the main town. Due to the volcanic nature of the island, there are numerous hot springs around that have healing properties. Loutra Spa, located in the north, is a popular place to visit. Another must-visit attraction is the Volcanological Museum in the village of Nikia, which opened in 2008. The museum provides information about the island’s volcano, making it a great place to learn more about Nisyros’s geological history.

3. Nisyros is also known for its gorgeous beaches. Paralia choclaki Beach, Pachia Ammos, Pali Beach, and Avlaki are some of the best beaches on the island. In addition to swimming, visitors can enjoy several activities, such as hiking, island hopping to Gyali islet, Kos, or even Tilos, and savouring the local dishes.

To get to Nisyros, you can only use a ferry, and the closest island is Kos. So, you need to fly to Kos and then take a ferry to reach Nisyros.
