Uncover the Beauty of Gavdos: A Guide to Greece’s Southern Island

Gavdos, located in the southernmost part of Europe, is an island unlike any other. It is part of Crete and is located just 50 km away from it, yet it feels like a world away. The island is small, only 9 km long and 4.5 km wide, but it packs a big punch with its stunning landscape, breathtaking beaches, and rich history. With only around 150 residents, Gavdos is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.Some of the things to see here are:-

Things not to miss – The capital of the island, Kastri, is perched on a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. The island is dotted with 17 churches, with the main church, Agia Triada, being a must-visit. Another popular attraction is the lighthouse at Ambelos, which was destroyed by the Germans during World War II but has since been reconstructed. The ancient Venetian fortress at Kefalo, the folklore museum in Vatsiana, and the excavations sites in Sarakiniko and Agiannis are just a few of the other historical treasures you can discover on the island.

Gavdos is a beach-lover’s paradise, with numerous stunning beaches to choose from. The Korfos Pebbles Beach is perfect for swimming, while the sandy beach of Sarakiniko is named after the Saracen pirates who once stayed on the island. The shallow beach of Agios Ioannis was ranked second by Discovery Channel for its beauty, and it is also home to a tiny church. The Tripiti Beach is particularly unique, with a massive chair structure that declares “southernmost part of Europe” and stunning rock formations and arches.

In addition to its breathtaking beaches, Gavdos also offers a range of outdoor activities. Snorkelling, hiking, diving, camping, fishing, and stargazing are all popular pastimes on the island. Whether you’re an adventure-seeker or a nature lover, Gavdos has something for everyone.

To get to Gavdos from Crete, you can take a ferry from the port of Sfakia. Once you arrive on the island, you’ll feel a sense of peace and tranquility that is difficult to find elsewhere.
