From Athens to Thessolanki: A Journey to Remember

Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, is a hidden gem in the north. With a rich history, culture, and breathtaking scenery, Thessaloniki is a destination that you simply can’t miss. The best time to visit this city is between June and October when you can enjoy the warm Mediterranean climate while exploring all that the city has to offer. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at some of the must-visit attractions, activities, and places to discover in Thessaloniki.

Start your day off by the harbour, where you’ll find a plethora of restaurants and cafes. Take a stroll along the 5km promenade and discover some of Thessaloniki’s iconic landmarks, including the Photography Museum and the white tower, which has been turned into a Byzantine Museum showcasing Thessaloniki’s fascinating history. Along the waterfront, you’ll also find the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. As you explore the promenade, make sure to stop by some of the thematic parks like the Garden of Sand, the Garden of the Mediterranean, and the Garden of Sculptors.

The Archaeology Museum is another must-visit attraction. Here, you’ll find a collection of artefacts from both Thessaloniki and Macedonia. Lastly, the Byzantine walls that were built in 315 BC by King Cassander, which are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site is also another feature of Thessaloniki which can be seen in the old part of the city

In the centre of the city lies the Rotunda, which was constructed in 300 AD. It was originally built as a final resting place for the Roman ruler but was later turned into a church, and then a mosque during the Ottoman Empire. Today, it is a sculpture museum.

Foodie Markets– If you’re looking to experience the local culture, then the Thessaloniki markets are a must-visit. Two of the best markets are the Modiano and Kapano markets, located right next to each other on Ermou street. Here, you can sample some of the most delicious local goods, including herbs, oils, and meats. You can even have lunch here.

Kapani Market

Churches to see – Thessaloniki is also home to several beautiful churches that you must explore, including the Agios Dimitrios Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its interior is simply stunning. Other churches worth visiting include the Church of Panagia Acheiropoietos or the Monastery of Vlatadon. Another UNESCO World Heritage site is the Church of the Holy Apostles, built in the 14th century and used as a mosque during Turkish rule. When visiting religious sites, make sure to dress appropriately.

Nearby Places– If you’re looking to discover more of the surrounding areas, make sure to check out the villages near Thessaloniki. You can combine Vergina and Pella, which are both around an hour away from the main town. Vergina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and enlightens us about the history of Macedonia. Here, you can visit the Museum of Royal Tombs, the Agia theatre, the fortified walls, and the royal necropolis. Pella used to be the capital of Macedonia and is the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The archaeological site here offers in-depth knowledge of the history and culture.

Vergina (UNESCO World Heritage)

Beaches – For those who love the beach, Thessaloniki has several must-visit beaches, including Agia Triada, which is very close to the city, Angelochori Sandy Beach, and Patamos Beach. If you’re willing to travel a bit further, make sure to visit Kassandra Peninsula Beach, which has turquoise waters and sandy beaches.

Best activities to do:- If you’re an adventure junkie, a hike up Mount Olympus is a must-do activity. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve offers breathtaking views of the island and the Aegean Sea. The hike can be challenging, but the reward is worth it. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world when you reach the summit. Thessaloniki is famous for its delectable cuisine. A food tour of the island is a fantastic way to explore the local culture and indulge in some mouth-watering dishes. Try the famous Greek salad, souvlaki, and moussaka. A boat tour of Thessaloniki is a perfect way to explore the island’s stunning coastline. You’ll get to visit hidden coves, pristine beaches, and stunning sea caves. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love the cooking classes that Thessolanki has to offer. Learn how to prepare some of the island’s most famous dishes. Thessaloniki is a shopper’s paradise. The island is famous for its traditional handicrafts, including pottery, woven rugs, and textiles. You can also buy local products such as honey, olive oil, and herbs.

How to Get There – Thessaloniki can be easily accessed from Athens by flight, car, or even train. If you’re driving, it takes around 5 hours to reach the island from Athens. Alternatively, you can take a flight, which only takes an hour, or a train, which would take about 4 hours. Whichever mode of transportation you choose, the journey to Thessolanki is an adventure in itself.
