Off the Beaten Path: Sikinos, Greece’s Best-Kept Secret

Between two popular Greek islands, Ios and Folegandros, lies the charming and secluded island of Sikinos. With a small population of only 300 residents, this hidden gem is not yet exposed to mass tourism. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway and a taste of traditional Greek culture, Sikinos is the perfect destination. With its beautiful beaches, picturesque villages, and delicious local produce, this island has a lot to offer.

Attractions:- The island’s capital, Chora, is a must-visit. Here, you’ll find a variety of local shops and restaurants to explore. A trip up the hill to Kastro, a fortified village, is also a must. The three iconic windmills on top of the hill provide a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Be sure to visit the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigis during sunset for an unforgettable experience. Another beautiful attraction in Chora is the Church of Panagia Pantanassa, with its striking blue dome located in the paved square of Kastro. If you’re interested in history, be sure to visit the Folklore Museum and Byzantine Museum of Sikinos.

The port of Alopronia is the perfect place to relax by the seaside while enjoying delicious local food. For those who love to explore, a trip to the old monastery of Episkopi is a must. Built over a Roman mausoleum, it is only 4km from Chora. You’ll also find some ancient ruins in Agia Marina, which is close to Episkopi.

Beaches:- Sikinos is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Greece. The sandy beach of Alopronia is very popular, while the pebbly beach of Agios Georgios is a quieter option. The Dialiskari beach, situated between the two, is a combination of sandy and pebble beach. These beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and taking a break from the world.

Activities:- Hiking is a popular activity in Sikinos. The island offers a variety of scenic routes that are perfect for exploring. For a unique experience, take a boat tour to the sea cave of Mavri Spilia (Black Cave) located under the Monastery of Chrysopigi. You can also go island hopping to some of the nearby islands such as Ios, Naxos, Milos, Santorini, Anafi, or Syros.

Getting There:- Unfortunately, Sikinos does not have an airport, so the nearest airport is on Santorini Island. Ferries come three times a week from Athens, but the timetable may change depending on demand, and the journey takes approximately 7 hours.

Sikinos is a hidden gem in Greece that is waiting to be discovered. With its stunning beaches, picturesque villages, delicious local produce, and a variety of activities, it’s the perfect destination for those looking for a peaceful getaway. Whether you want to relax by the seaside, explore ancient ruins, or go on an adventure, Sikinos has something for everyone. Plan your trip now and get ready to discover the beauty of this enchanting island
